Topic: Enabling Conversations for Quality with the OBREAU Tripod
Building a culture of quality implies conversation, specifically conversation that reaches down, reveals and makes discussable underlying assumptions, differences in perspective and difficult topics. Usually, however, conversation is impeded by default behavior patterns including reacting, judging others and ‘dancing around’. This session introduces a structure for supporting productive conversations on tough (thorny, sticky) issues, the OBREAU Tripod. OBREAU represents the first two letters of each of the pivotal words, Observation, Reasonableness (allowing that others are reasonable) and Authenticity. The workshop will assist participants to practice engaging more mindfully and effectively with others on whatever challenges they face that are not purely technical.

Learning outcomes 
Participants will gain:

• Awareness of default practices that tend to hamper conversations on tough issues
• Appreciation of the three OBREAU practices
• Ideas on how to prepare for conversations on tough quality-related issues – and on virtually any other issues of concern.

Speaker Bio: Presented by Don Dunoon and Richard Van Doel Don Dunoon: As an independent leadership and organizational development specialist, Don has over 20 years consulting experience. Based in Sydney, Australia, he has worked with clients and colleagues internationally. He is the author of In the Leadership Mode, a book that frames leadership and management as different forms of intervention in dealing with tough challenges. His writings and materials, including an article with acclaimed Harvard mindfulness researcher, Dr. Ellen Langer, have been used in leadership-related courses at several leading US universities. A workshop on Don’s OBREAU Tripod structure, for supporting conversations that matter, was awarded “Outstanding Educator Workshop” at the 2016 conference of the Association of Leadership Educators in Sacramento, CA. Don presented a workshop at WCQI 2018 in Seattle with Dr. Richard Doel (T13 – Enabling conversations for quality with the OBREAU Tripod).

Richard Van Doel: Richard has served as Performance Validation’s President/CEO since 2006 and is a member of Performance Validation’s Board of Directors. Performance Validation is a 100% Employee-Owned Company which provides technical services to the life science industry.  He is a Certified Quality Auditor (ASQ) and received his PhD in Organizational Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University. Additionally, Richard was awarded a Louis O. Kelso Fellowship by Rutgers University, School of Management and Labor Relations.  Many of our leadership challenges involve communication, or the lack thereof and the inability to communicate contentious issues.  The OBREAU Tripod provides a mechanism to prepare the individual for these types of conversations and we look forward to share this tool with you.

Speaker Bio: Joe Cooper is a project, program, and portfolio management consultant at Digital Management Inc. (DMI) in Indianapolis, IN USA. His passion is helping organizations to optimize the speed and reliability of their project delivery and turning this improvement into a strategic competitive advantage. Joe speaks internationally on project management topics at events such as, PMI Global Congress, PMI Japan Forum, PMI Indonesia Symposium, PMI Australia Conference, PMI Hong Kong, TOCICO International Conference (South Africa, Germany, US), and other local, regional, and global conferences.

Joe attended graduate school at Oklahoma State University studying Laser Physics and conducting experimental research in medical applications of lasers (tissue coagulation). Topic: Improving the Effectiveness of Visual Inspection

Despite the great strides in machine vision and error proofing methodologies, most manufacturing plants still rely on human visual inspection at various points in their process – especially for cosmetic appearance evaluation. Unfortunately, most production and quality engineers see visual inspection as a “black box” and do not know many of the factors of influence on visual inspection effectiveness. This also often leads to a failure to control the impact factors and to overestimate the potential effectiveness of visual inspection. Learn some of the basics of visual inspection and evaluate your quality engineering of this critical point in your process. Open discussion and participation welcome!

Speaker Bio:

Ted Schorn serves as Vice President, Quality and Technology, for Enkei America, Inc., a producer of aluminum alloy road wheels for automotive application. He has over 35 years of quality experience in automotive, medical and aerospace industries. Ted also serves as President of the Lean Network, Inc. a non-profit organization of Honda suppliers focused on improving their quality through Lean Manufacturing principles. Ted also operates his own consulting company, Schorn Consulting, LLC. He has published scores of technical and managerial papers and is a frequent conference speaker. He was awarded American Foundry Society’s Scientific Merit award for his work in visual inspection in 2008 and is an honorary lifetime member of the society for his Hoyt Memorial Lecture in 2005. AFS is publishing his book, Improving the Effectiveness of Visual Inspection, later this Spring. Ted is a certified Lead Assessor to IATF 16949 and ISO 14001, a Level III certified radiographer and a Senior member of ASQ.
