This presentation is very controversial, as it destroys the myth of the normal curve in precision machining! It goes into the correct distribution, and the proper setup of control charts that allow absolute control of the process! It covers how Cpk’s cannot be calculated for precision diameters and lengths – because the distribution is non-normal (see AIAG PPAP 4th edition 2.2.11.5, NOTE), and how compressing control limits increases variation, and is not continuous improvement! It sounds like blasphemy, but it is all true – and once you see the facts, it is impossible to argue!
BOB DOERING has been in the quality field for over 20 years. He is currently a quality engineer for an automotive component manufacturing firm, as well as a consultant in SPC, Metrology and Quality Concepts training. He holds associates degrees from Lorain County Community College of Elyria, Ohio and The University of Akron of Akron, Ohio; BA in Business and MBA in Systems Management from Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio.

The challenges associated with this approach will be presented along with methods for dealing with them. A case study-based exercise will be used to give participants a hands-on opportunity to practice determining what product/service features should be investigated, based on information obtained from a variety of data and feedback sources.

This session also will demonstrate the tabulation process for customers’ responses to Kano survey questions.

Abstract: This session will pick up the previous case study, and participants will learn how to transform the respondents’ tallied data into specific metrics that can be plotted on the Kano Model. The results from the previous case study work will be displayed, and they will be used to teach how to interpret the findings. A discussion of longitudinal use of Kano analysis also will be conducted so that participants understand how organizations can detect when customers’ perspectives of product/service features have changed.

DEBORAH HOPEN, Deborah has over 40 years of experience in total quality management. She has served as a senior executive with both Fortune and Inc 500 companies. Her varied experience includes time spent in general management, quality assurance and quality control, training, human resources, organization development, research and development, process engineering, and accounting.
From July 1995 through June 1997, she served as President and Chairman of the American Society for Quality. She also has served as President of the Washington State Quality Award Program and the International Standards Initiative, as well as being involved as a leader with numerous Washington State cultural and charitable organizations. Hopen is a Fellow of ASQ and is the editor of ASQ’s Journal for Quality and Participation.
In 2015, she was recognized with the Asia Pacific Quality Organization’s Miflora M. Gatchalian Medal for Women in Global Quality Leadership. She was a 2014 recipient of the ASQ Distinguished Service Medal. In 2011 she received ASQ’s Gryna Award, its Quality Management Division’s Roger Berger Spirit Award, and its Los Angeles Section’s Simon Collier Award. She also received the APQC C. Jackson Grayson Distinguished Pioneer of Quality Award in 2012.
In addition to being the author of more than 200 publications and presentations, she has taught statistics and statistical process control, quality management, production management, and production costing at the university level. She has a B.S. in Applied Science. Since then she has completed advanced studies in business administration, industrial and clinical psychology, and operations research. She was a Certified Quality Engineer for over 15 years and is recognized as a LSS Master Black Belt. Her consulting list includes clients from the manufacturing, service, military, government, healthcare, education, and not-for-profit sectors.

This is a look at the soft side of quality, performed in a creative manner that you probably have never seen before. Sometimes all we need is a twist to our outlook to make a difference, to reach a new level of commitment to improvement. Rather than focus on a single topic, this fast moving talk engages participants by asking them to listen and think. The slides are limited, to allow freer thinking. Participants choose the very order of (up to) 16 subjects based on visual hints, avoiding the usual ‘death by PowerPoint’ scenario.
This talk is a creative attempt to look at where we are and how we got here. Where may we go if we take hold of our future and make something of it?
